Candlemas: a celebration of pagan origin to celebrate the pancake!
February 2nd is a very special day for crepe lovers and THE best day of the year to enjoy one! Why February 2nd? Let's go back in history!
First, Candlemas, according to biblical origins, is always celebrated 40 days after Christmas Eve on December 24, therefore on February 2.
According to a myth, in the countryside, if pancakes were not tossed on Candlemas Day, the wheat would be lost for the year! The pancake protected the harvest from mold, symbolized prosperity and, according to some beliefs, even protected families from misfortune. The pancake, with its round shape and golden color, also evoked the Sun, finally returning after the long, cold winter nights!

The tradition of the gold coin!
According to tradition, not only did one have to make and eat pancakes, but one also had to respect another custom: the gold coin ! Peasants flipped the first pancake with their right hand, while holding a gold coin in their left hand. If the pancake fell back into the pan, it symbolized a sign of wealth for the coming year! The most supersticistic even kept the first pancake in a cupboard to attract luck!
We wish you a happy Candlemas and delicious pancakes!
