When chocolate crosses the ages…. Beggars: a mystical and symbolic origin!

Have you heard of mendiants, those decadent little chocolate sweets made with dried fruit and nuts?

Their symbolic origins date back to the four mendicant orders of the Church in the Middle Ages! What is a mendicant order? It is a religious order that depends solely on charity for its livelihood. It devotes itself fully to its devotion! In the Middle Ages, four mendicant orders predominated. Each was associated with a specific color!

The Franciscans or Grey Friars, founded in 1209, were associated with the grapes of Malaga .

The Carmelites or Brown Friars, founded in 1206-1212, were associated with hazelnuts and walnuts.

The Dominicans or White Friars, founded in 1215, were associated with halved almonds.

The Augustinians or Violet Friars, founded in 1244-1256, were associated with figs and berries.

The mendicant orders were therefore associated with the color of the fruits or nuts placed on the chocolate! This is the mystical origin of these chocolate delicacies, which have truly stood the test of time and eras!

And you, do you have a favorite beggar? Which mendicant order is he associated with? We can't choose! We love them all :)

To get our beggars: it's HERE !
